Upcoming Event 2019!

A Musical Tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

The Traditional Music Society proudly presents the first in its concert series for 2019... "A Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King once said, "The freedom songs are playing a strong and vital role in our struggle." Songs such as, We Shall Overcome, Eyes on the Prize, Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around and Which Side Are You On, were staple selections sung by freedom fighters and the participants of the struggle thus inspiring them to pursue the goals of the movement. Additionally many popular songs were written by major artists of that era, which motivated the general public and changed the course of history in America... songs such as, Mississippi Got Damn by Nina Simone, A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke, Keep On Pushing by Curtis Mayfield, just to name a few. We will also explore the music of previously enslaved and colonized people, whom Dr. King fought for as well... music from Africa, Haiti, Cuba and Puerto Rico. We will be joined by two prominent Kansas City jazz artists, saxophonist Charles Perkins and bassist DeAnthony Manning, along with guest speaker Keith Brown. A must see event!
